Enamelling is an ancient craft dating back to at least ca. 12th century where it became widely used in decorative objects. The enamel consist of very fine grains of glass and metal oxides and is available in a wide range of colours.

It is usually fused to a metal base such as copper, silver or gold by heating to high temperatures.

The (basic) different types of enamel are transparent, opaque, opalescent, liquid enamel (wet process) and painting enamels. It is also available in crayons and pencils.
